01 / Matteo

Matteo

Young Matteo, with short dark hair and no glasses, plays on a Commodore 64 with his teenage uncle.

Aged 4–5

This is where it all switches on.

A Commodore 64, a joystick and my uncle: just thirteen years older than me, he is my guide to a whole new world. With him I discover games, computers and a curiosity about technology that never leaves me.

Matteo at about seven stands beside a pool with a towel and goggles, his mum’s reassuring hand on his shoulder and a swimming lesson in the background.

Childhood

A gentle nudge.

I lose my dad at six, and it becomes just Mum and me. He was a cyclist; she insists that I take up a sport. I am reluctant at first, but start swimming lessons. Deep down, sitting still has never really been my thing.

Young teenage Matteo, with round cheeks, short dark hair and thin glasses, reads manga beside his PC, with rollerblades on the floor.

Aged 12–13

Another world. Then out to play.

Summers are split between video games and rollerblades. I fall in love with manga, anime and comics too: JoJo becomes my favourite, alongside plenty of other heroes. From the Commodore to the Amiga and consoles, there is always another world to explore.

Teenage Matteo, with a fuller build, round cheeks and longer dark hair, practises a kung fu stance in a gym.

Aged 11–19

From the screen to the gym.

Manga, games and films with Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Van Damme spark my love of martial arts. I start kung fu at eleven and keep going until nineteen. This time, I get to try the moves myself.

Matteo in his early twenties, with closely cropped hair, rectangular glasses and light stubble, works on a laptop at the office.

After school

Curiosity becomes a career.

After finishing school, I choose to start working in IT. That childhood passion becomes my career: more than twenty years of solving problems and learning new things. And the games? They stay, alongside films and TV series.

Matteo in a beanie, black glasses and beard walks along Belfast’s waterfront, with the yellow shipyard cranes behind him.

Aged 30

A new life in Belfast.

Work takes me to Northern Ireland, into IT security for an American company. I move at thirty and spend five years in Belfast: an experience that changes the way I see the world.

Adult Matteo, bald, wearing glasses and muscular, trains with two dumbbells in his home gym.

From age 33

A new passion gains strength.

After years with little sport, I start again at thirty-three, this time with weights. Workout by workout, training becomes part of my life. The houses change, and so does the home gym, but the drive to train stays.

Matteo, bald and almost clean shaven, and Milena with her braid smile at each other beside the pool on their summer 2019 holiday.

Summer 2019

This time, the timing is right.

I already knew Milena through my best friend, but it had never been our moment. Then a week away with friends in the summer of 2019 changes everything: we fall in love. I begin looking for a way to move back to Italy, to her.

02 / Milena

Milena

Young Milena, with a dark bob and fringe, plays with dolls alongside her little sister; the family holds her newborn brother in the background.

Childhood in Inzago

A home full of life.

I grow up near Milan with Mum, Dad and two younger siblings: my sister is four years younger, my brother eight. Between dolls and Barbies, in a family this big there is always someone to share the day with.

Young teenage Milena smiles in the school library, holding a stack of books and a certificate with a small gold rosette.

The last year of middle school

One more page. Then another.

I have always loved reading. So much that in my last year of middle school I win the library prize for reading the most books in the school. Stories keep me company, and finding time for another chapter is never a problem.

Teenage Milena and Laura watch a romantic film on the sofa, with rented film cases on the coffee table.

High school

Our weekends come from the video shop.

I meet Laura in high school. We often spend Saturdays and Sundays at her house watching films from the video shop, especially love stories. When I see Titanic, there is no question: it is my favourite film.

The five Mille gathered closely together for dinner, smiling; Milena, with long dark hair, is in the middle of her four friends.

Since our second year of high school

Five friends, the Mille.

Milena, Ilaria, Laura, Laura, Elisa: our initials become the Mille. Some of us have known each other since childhood in Inzago; in high school we become inseparable. Through nights out, laughter and changing lives, we keep finding ways to be there for each other.

Young adult Milena on the phone in a freight office, with a computer, paperwork and a truck at the warehouse in the background.

Since 2004

One company, many chapters.

After school I join Expeditors, where I still work today. I start in operations, then move into sales in 2017. Through shipments and different roles, this company becomes part of my life and helps me grow as a person too.

Milena reads a mystery novel in an armchair with a surprised expression, surrounded by books, with a notebook and pen on the side table.

A lasting passion

The ending has to surprise me.

These days I prefer thrillers, mysteries and horror to grand romances on screen. I love Nolan’s films and stories with a mystery to solve: no predictable endings, please! When I was younger I wrote short stories too, mostly thrillers. That need to find out what happens next has stayed with me.

Milena applies face cream at her dressing table, with skincare products in the morning light; an exercise mat is stored beside the door.

Everyday pleasures

Taking it slowly. Deciding in a minute.

Skincare has been a passion since childhood: I enjoy learning about products and looking after myself. I am outgoing and instinctive, but I like taking my time. And sport? Matteo has got me working out, though let’s be honest: the gym is hardly my great love.

Milena and Matteo smile at their dining table while planning the wedding, with flower ideas, a Japan travel guide and two plates of pasta.

The next chapter

My own love story, at last.

When I meet Matteo, I know I have found the right person. We share a love of good food and a curiosity for travel. Getting married has been my dream since childhood: I throw myself into the preparations, with his help and ideas. After “I do”, Japan awaits: I cannot wait to discover a world so different from ours.

Matteo & Milena

Our honeymoon manga

Shibuya

One crossing, a thousand directions, and the two of us in the middle. We picture ourselves in Shibuya, looking up.

Matteo and Milena cross Shibuya hand in hand among the city lights.

Akihabara

Matteo could spend a whole day here. Manga, games and shelves to explore.

Matteo buys a pile of manga in Akihabara, while Milena helps him balance it.

Milena will gently remind him that our suitcase has its limits.

The arcade

This is Matteo’s stop: buttons, lights and the promise of one last game.

Matteo and Milena play side by side in a Japanese arcade.

Milena cheers him on, then suggests the next level: two bowls of ramen.

Ramen

After all that walking, two steaming bowls and time to talk about our day. Sometimes the loveliest memories start with a simple dinner.

Matteo and Milena enjoy dinner at the counter of a small ramen bar.

Kanazawa

In Kanazawa, we dream of a stop to explore samurai history, for Matteo.

Matteo and Milena pause beside a pond in a Kanazawa garden.

Then a garden chosen by Milena, without looking for the shortest route.

From armour to a quiet bench. The plan: stop even when we don’t need to.

Takayama

Milena sets the pace here: shoes left at the door and a cup of tea. Matteo puts everything else on pause.

Milena pours tea while Matteo listens in a quiet ryokan room.

Fuji?

A detour towards Mount Fuji is still one of our ideas.

Matteo and Milena imagined beside a lake with Mount Fuji in the distance.

For now, we’ll draw it here in our journal. The journey will tell us whether we meet.

Kyoto

In Kyoto, we picture ourselves beneath the torii gates. Milena sets the pace; Matteo follows the stories of the place. Neither watches the clock.

Matteo and Milena walk together under Kyoto’s red torii gates.

Nara

A possible day trip to Nara, its park and its deer.

A deer approaches Matteo and Milena in Nara park.

The kind of encounter that makes you smile and becomes a story you can’t wait to tell.

Osaka

Dotonbori’s signs and the smell of street food.

Matteo and Milena try takoyaki under the evening lights of Osaka.

The temptation to try one more thing, one bite at a time.

Osaka could be our liveliest farewell to Japan.

Abu Dhabi

After Japan, we dream of five or six days by the sea. A barefoot walk, with no hurry.

Matteo and Milena play in the waves on an Abu Dhabi beach, relax with tea and manga, and watch the sunset hand in hand, seen from behind.

Milena with her tea and Matteo finally relaxing, with a manga book close at hand.

Then standing hand in hand as the sun sinks towards the sea. This chapter is still an imagined plan too.

A journey still taking shape. Places and activities are provisional; the route is an illustration.
